The Vampire's Unforgotten Story Page #5

This is a snippet to my story that I am writing, but I have been working on this for so long, and I'm really proud of it. It is about a vampire who is recounting the stories of his life, to a reporter but she gets a different story than her father did.

“But then, Nikolai’s tone was almost playful, his dark blue eyes gleaming as he hovered over me. I felt cornered, trapped in a small space with nowhere to run. He crouched down, bringing himself to my level, his gaze locking with mine.” “I’m giving you a choice.” “he repeated, his voice softer now, almost intimate. His words echoed through the room, hanging in the air like a challenge. “ “Nikolai gestured around us, at the carnage that filled the room. Blood coated the floor, bodies sprawled in grotesque angles, and the air was thick with a sickly metallic smell. His eyes flicked from the chaos back to me, a slow, deliberate smile tugging at the corners of his mouth.” “To me, it’s not scary.” “he said, his voice steady and cool.” “But you… you could get used to it too.” “ I swallowed hard, my throat was tightening. I wanted to reject him, to tell him he was wrong that I would never be like him, that I would get used to this. The moment I’d followed his orders, the moment I had… killed. Nikolai’s gaze stayed locked on mine, watching me closely. He could sense my hesitation. He always did. It was like he could see into the parts of me I wanted to keep hidden, the parts of me that wrestled with the pull toward him, the pull toward this life.” “You don’t have to fight it anymore,” “Nikolai said softly, taking another step forward. His hand hovered just inches from my arm, like he was daring me to take it.” “I know you, Damien. I know the pain you carry, the anger. This….” “he gestured once more to the destruction around us.” “This is your way out. Your freedom.” “I clenched my fists, the blood in my veins thrumming with tension. My heart pounded in my chest, as if trying to drown out his words, but they seeped in all the same. Nikolai had always known how to find my weaknesses, how to use them to manipulate me. But this felt different, more personal, like he was trying to reshape me into something that resembled him.” “I’m not like you,” “I muttered, though the conviction in my voice wavered.” “Nikolai’s smile widened, his eyes softening. “Aren’t you?” “he asked, his voice barely above a whisper. “You’ve already proven you’re capable of so much more than you ever believed.” “I stiffened, flashes of that night—the night I killed my father—flooding my mind. I’d done it because Nikolai had made me believe there was no other way. I’d done it because I thought it would free me from the pain. But had it? Or had it only tied me closer to him?” "I gave you a gift, Damien," “he continued, his voice gentle, as if he were speaking to a friend rather than someone he had manipulated into murder.” "I gave you the chance to be free. Truly free." “His hand finally touched my arm, light and lingering, like a promise. I flinched at the contact, but I didn’t pull away. His words were crawling under my skin, making it harder to remember the anger I had felt, the hatred I had carried for so long.” "You think I want this?" “I said, my voice low, shaky.” "You think I want to become like you? A monster?" “Nikolai’s expression didn’t change, but his eyes grew darker, more intense.” "A monster? Perhaps," “he said.” "But monsters are free, Damien. We are bound by nothing. No pain, no regret. We live as we choose." “I stared at him, my mind reeling. He spoke of freedom, but I knew the truth. I wasn’t free. I was trapped in this web he had spun around me, caught between the life I had once known and the one he was trying to pull me into. And yet, the more he spoke, the harder it became to resist the pull.” "What kind of choice is this?" “I asked, my voice barely audible.” “Nikolai’s hand slid down my arm, his fingers brushing against mine.” "The only one that matters," “he whispered.” "The choice to stop running. The choice to embrace who you were always meant to be." “Nikolai’s presence enveloped me, his voice low and steady, yet it carried the weight of something profound. His blue eyes locked on mine, and for a moment, the carnage around us seemed to fade away. The bodies, the blood, the destruction—all of it blurred into the background. All I could focus on was him, and the way his words sank into me, peeling back the layers I had tried to protect for so long.” “Stand with me,” “he said, his tone quiet but unyielding. There was no demand, no threat, just an invitation—soft, but unshakable.” “Be with me.” “I stared at him, unsure of what to say, of what to feel. I hated him, didn’t I? The thought of everything he had done, of what he had turned me into, was enough to set my pulse racing with anger and fear. And yet, there was something deeper. Something undeniable. A pull I couldn’t explain.” “I chose you,” “Nikolai continued, his French accent weaving through the silence.” “As no one has done before. Not for power, not for control—but for you, Damien.” “His hand reached out, brushing gently against my cheek, and I found myself leaning into the warmth of his touch without realising it.” “I will put you first. Always.” “His words pierced through me. It was a promise I hadn’t known I needed to hear. A promise I didn’t think anyone would ever offer me.” “Choose me,” “he whispered, leaning in closer, his breath ghosting across my skin.” “Like no one has done before.” “His voice was almost pleading now, but there was strength behind it, a certainty that I couldn’t ignore.” “And I promise, I will never hurt you.” “For a moment, I couldn’t speak. My heart hammered in my chest, and all the anger, the denial, the fear—it all seemed to melt under the weight of his promise. His hand cupped the back of my neck, holding me steady as if he could sense the storm raging inside me.” “Mon humaine innocent,” “he murmured softly, his lips brushing lightly against my temple.” “You don’t have to fight this anymore. You don’t have to fight me.” “I swallowed hard, my throat dry, and I realised that part of me wanted to say yes. Despite everything. Despite the chaos. Despite the blood. There was something in the way he spoke to me, something in the way he looked at me, that made me believe him.” “Slowly, cautiously, I nodded. Nikolai’s eyes softened, the faintest trace of a smile appearing on his lips—not triumph, not manipulation, but something more genuine. Relief. Gratitude. His hand slid down to my shoulder, squeezing it gently, as if to reassure me that I had made the right choice.” “You’re mine now,” “he said, his voice barely above a whisper.” “And I am yours. You’ll never have to be alone again, Damien.” “Nikolai’s words lingered in the air between us, heavy with promise. I could feel the shift inside me—the crumbling of walls I had built to protect myself. The quiet surrender. For so long, I had fought against him, against this, but now the fight was gone, drained from me like water slipping through my fingers. He stepped closer, his presence overwhelming but no longer terrifying. His hands, strong but gentle, slid to the back of my neck, pulling me in just a fraction more, his lips brushing against my ear as he spoke.”
