The Vampire's Unforgotten Story Page #4

This is a snippet to my story that I am writing, but I have been working on this for so long, and I'm really proud of it. It is about a vampire who is recounting the stories of his life, to a reporter but she gets a different story than her father did.

“You think killing him was some kind of gift?” I spat, my voice trembling with rage. “You didn’t take the pain away, you made it worse. You took away my choice.” “His smile faltered slightly, but his confidence didn’t waver.” “Your choice?” “he echoed, his tone soft, almost condescending. “Was already made, the moment you met me. I simply pushed you to see it.” “I stepped back, the space between us suddenly feeling too small, too suffocating. My fists tightened at my sides, nails biting into my palms as I fought to keep my composure. The weight of everything I’d done, the blood on my hands pressed down on me, threatening to crush me.” “I never wanted this,” “I said, my voice barely above a whisper.” “I didn’t want to be like you.” “Nikolai’s gaze darkened, a flicker of something almost amusement crossing his features. “But you are,” he said simply. “That’s what you refuse to see. You’re not as different from me as you like to think. The darkness in you it’s always been there. I just brought it to the surface.” “I shook my head, refusing to let his words sink in, refusing to believe them. But there was a part of me, deep down, that he knew he was right. That night when I did what I did, something inside me shifted. Something that couldn’t be undone.” “You think you’re free from it now?” “Nikolai continued, his voice low and dangerous. “You think you can walk away from what you have done? You can’t. No one can. You crossed the line, and now you have to live with it.” “I swallowed hard, trying to ignore the way his words cut through me like knives.” ‘“I don’t have to live with it,” “I said, my hardening as I tried to reclaim some semblance of control.” “You don’t own me.” “Nikolai’s eyes gleamed with something dark, his smile returning, slow and deliberate.” “We’ll see about that.” “he said, his voice a low, dangerous rumble that sent a chill down my spine. The room seemed to close in around us, the shadows deepening as he stepped closer, his presence so overwhelming that it was almost suffocating.” “Nikolai’s gaze darkened, his head tilting to the side as he listened intently to the sound of my heart. His vampire instincts seemed to sharpen, his predatory instincts taking over. He took another step closer, his large frame towering over me. My heart raced even faster, the fear and adrenaline mingling together to create a potent cocktail of emotion.” “But he surprised me, by being soft he touched my cheek and I instantly moved away but his touch was so soft, it shocked me deeply, Nikolai’s hand froze in the air as I pulled away, my reaction a reflex fueled by fear and defensiveness. The softness of his touch had taken me off guard, a stark contrast to the cold indifference he usually displayed. For a moment, his hand hung there, almost as if he was caught off guard by his own actions.” “Nikolai walked back to the table, picking up a half-empty glass filled with blood and taking a long sip from it. The crimson liquid swirled in the glass, staining the otherwise clear surface. I watched him, the sight of him drinking blood so casually making my stomach churn.” “I assume you came here to hurt me. So do it,” “he said, as he sipped his blood.” “Nikolai’s words hung in the air like a challenge, daring me to do something, anything. But I didn’t want to give him the satisfaction of knowing he was getting to me. I stood my ground, my chin raised defiantly, my heart racing inside my chest.” “A part of me didn’t want to do anything, like I came here to do. But I made myself kick into gear, and I grabbed a torch near the fireplace and I lit it with fire and threw it on him. Nikolai roared in anger as I tossed the flaming torch at him, the fire catching on his clothes and spreading quickly. But to my surprise, the flames only seemed to annoy him, not hurt him. He advanced toward me, his eyes dark and furious. I tried to stand, but the floor was slick with blood, and I stumbled, falling back against the sticky, slippery mess.” “I watched in horror as Nikolai advanced towards me, his entire body engulfed in flames. Everything seemed to slow down, the world around me fading to a background blur. My heart thundered in my chest as he drew closer. His eyes locked on me like a predator closing in on its prey.” “Nikolai casually tossed his jacket away, freeing himself from the flames that had licked at his clothes. The fire had left him unharmed, the only evidence of the attack being the now tattered fabric of his garments. He approached me, his steps deliberate and measured, until he was standing in front of me. He towered above me, his presence almost suffocating. He leaned in, his voice dropping to a menacing whisper.” “I chose you.” “he whispered, his voice as smooth as ever, but there was an edge to it that sent a shiver down my spine. I clenched my fists at my sides, willing myself not to show how his words affected me. His arrogance, his confidence always unnerved me, like he knew something I didn’t. Standing in front of him, I was reminded of the countless times I had tried to stay away, and yet here I was again, drawn in by some force I couldn’t explain. I had to remind myself who I was now. I wasn’t that lost young man anymore. I wasn’t the same person who had once looked up to him, mesmerised by the power he seemed to hold over me. My life, my heritage, my identity as a Creole man of New Orleans was all I had left to cling to.” “You didn’t choose me,” “I said, my voice steady, though my emotions beneath it churned.” “You manipulated me. You used me.” “Nikolai smiled, a slow, knowing grin that made my skin prickle.” “You think you didn’t have a choice?” “he asked, his tone light, almost amused.” “You think you would have stayed there? Under the thumb of your father? Working the docks? You were always meant for more than that.” “I swallowed hard, pushing down the anger that was beginning to rise. My father had been cruel, yes angry and bitter. But whatever future I could have had, Nikolai had taken it away, forcing me down a path I had never wanted.” “You wanted to control me,” I said quietly, my gaze meeting his.” “And I let you.” “Nikolai tilted his head, studying me, as if weighing whether my words were a challenge or an admission. His gaze lingered, not on my face, but on the curl of my hair, on the tone of my skin, as if I were something precious, something that belonged to him.” “Perhaps,” “he said softly, his voice taking on a more thoughtful quality.” “But you were always more than just some obedient servant. I chose you because I saw your strength, Damien. Strength you didn’t realise you had.”
