The Nomination Page #2
Autumn 24
“Noah you sound so much like my dad it is unreal but I’ll call once I get back.” “Ok good luck,” Noah said right as he hung up. I began to pack my small bag with everything I might need and as the bag started to get full I knew that I was ready. I made my way to the small bar where the tip said Katy will be. I push open the door and instantly see her. She had long blonde hair that went to her knees, and an expensive leather jacket that made her look like a biker. She didn’t even spare me a glance which made me know that she had bodyguards watching her even if I didn’t know who they were. I chose a seat at the bar where I could see Katy easily without making it obvious that I was looking at her. The bartender walks up and asks for my I.D. I hand it over and he begins to laugh. “You are an american. That’s weird because we don’t typically get tourists over on this side of town,” He said it is a mix of French and english. “Well I guess I'm not your typical tourist,” I said in perfect French. “I guess you aren’t. What do you want to drink?” “I want to drink a coke please,” I said in perfect French again just to annoy him. “Ok little miss American wants a coke so lets get her a coke. Also that will be four euro’s.” “Great, I'll grab it,” I said as I reached into my pocket and grabbed the four euros I owed him. “Here you go.” “Good now here’s your coke and you must buy a drink every hour you stay here.” “Ok I will buy a drink for every hour I’m here,” I said before looking up to where Katy was sitting. I waited and watched her drink for five hours before she left, then once she left I waited another 20 minutes so I didn’t look suspicious. The next call I got from Noah was two days later and told me to go check out this other bar called The Snuggling Duckling. I walked in and it was the opposite of what I was expecting. The bar was packed for a Monday night. There were a bunch of big, buff guys all drinking and playing darts and Katy was with them. I found an empty booth and sat down. A waiter that looked to be in his 60s began to speak with me. “We don’t get very young women in this establishment. What would you like to drink and here's the menu if you're hungry.” “I will have a house margarita please.” “I will get that going for you mama.” He said. I began to get a little bit scared because I couldn’t take on one of the guys in here. I decided to wait and watch Katy for another hour or two until I leave, but decided that I’m not going to try and do anything. After waiting two hours Katy didn’t leave and I knew that I wouldn’t get an opportunity to get her so I left. As I opened the door I felt the nice cold breeze and I walked back to my apartment. This process repeated several more times and each time the only thing that would change was the bar she was at and the disguise I was wearing. Then on my ninth call from Noah saying that they had a lead and it was not at a bar which meant she was probably alone. I rushed to get ready and hurried over to the farmer’s market where she supposedly was. As I walked closer the bustling sound of sellers yelling and people trying to bargain filled my ears. I found a tall wooden sign pointed in all different directions but I decided to go to the fruit stalls. I looked around anxiously for anyone with long blonde hair but I couldn't see anyone. Then I turn around thinking I must have gone the wrong way and that’s when I see her except her hair isn’t blonde or long it’s cut into a short brown bob. But it must have been her. I know I saw her. Sticking with my instincts I decided to follow her and see if it was really Katy. Knowing that if I didn’t find out who this lady was then we wouldn’t know if Katy had changed her hair or if the person who gave us the tip was trying to trap me. I almost lost her in the crowd but somehow found her every time it was like she wasn’t trying to hide she was letting someone follow her which is unlike criminals. Most of the time they try to blend so much that it is impossible to track them but she wasn’t trying to blend in, she was acting like a normal human who went to the market. Eventually I catch up to her and she stops at a stall. I stop at the one next to her hoping to get a good look at her face. As I stared at her face, I confirmed that this lady I was following is Katy. I decided to keep following her and wait for my time to take her. I followed her around the market waiting until I got the right moment. But soon the smell of food made my stomach grumble. Knowing I haven’t eaten since yesterday. My body wanted me to stop at the nearby stall that had fresh bread and pastries or the stall that was selling steak sandwiches, but I pushed my body to keep following. She was standing at a stall selling fruit but mostly apples and she was almost to the front of the line. I began to look around and found the moment to get her. There wasn’t a stall next to the apple one but there was a building that I could take her into and get enough time to call Noah and ask for someone to come pick her up. Knowing that I would have to scrap the plan if I missed the short window. She started to hand the seller her money and I began to prepare myself. She started to walk and I lunged forward. I felt my heart racing in my chest as I reached to grab her. I felt dizzy like I was going to faint. Running into the building and pushing her into the first room I saw. With Katy knocked out I left her laying on the floor of the closet and made room for me to sit down next to her. The spray I used to knock her out should last for at least an hour. The only thing I had for company was a bunch of brooms and mops that are probably stored in this closet and haven't been used in 15 years. I hurried to find my phone from my back pocket and fumble with it for a few seconds until I got it in control. I quickly looked through my contacts but then my heart dropped. I scrolled past my parents' old contacts with the goofy photos I put with them. My mind began to get fuzzy and I forgot where I was and all I could think about was how different my life would be with them. I wouldn’t have to go on missions alone and we could still have our Sunday family dinners. I forget just how much I miss them but the moments like when I got nominated or scroll past their contacts hurt the most because I wish that they wouldn't have gone on that mission, I wish that they wouldn’t have chosen such a dangerous carrier, but I know that I don’t truly wish these thing I just wish that my parents were still alive. I finally began to look for Noah’s contact again and it popped right up this time. Slowly moving my finger up the phone screen to push the call button. The phone rang once, then twice, then a third time before it went to voicemail. I had to keep looking through my contacts before I found a friend who is an agent, I had worked with before, Ruby. I called her and she answered. She got me back up within ten minutes. Once we got Katy all ready and in the van she came over to me and we began to talk.
