The Nomination
Autumn 24
I was laying in my bed and grabbed my phone. I looked at the notifications and it said Noah has left you with a voice mail, do you want it to play? I slowly reached my finger over to click yes.“Hey Lily, it’s Noah, I wanted to surprise you in person but my schedule got filled up with work as I know yours does also. I called, Lily, because you got nominated for best agent of the year! Call me back when you get a second so I can give you your next assignment.” That voice mail from my manager, he has been my manager for about three years and has always been there for me. He is two years older than me and he has worked with my parents before they passed away about three years ago. He has always been like a brother to me and has helped me since my parents died. But the voice mail from him proves that I got nominated! I could win the best agent of the year just like how both my parents did! I can’t believe this is real. Jumping up and down in my messy room screaming like I just got a grammy. Out of nowhere the room starts to get a cold draft like it is trying to tell me something and I know exactly what it is. The room is trying to tell me that it wishes my parents were still here to celebrate with me like I did with them when they got nominated. Looking over at the picture of them at the award show that is always sitting on my desk that is covered in paint and full of happy memories. Looking at myself only a few years ago with my long brown hair in a braid and smiling brighter than the sun with my parents next to me proud of what they had accomplished. Remembering how at every event my dad would say, “Lily you look so much like your mom in that dress it is like you guys are twins not mother and daughter.” Missing my parents more than ever after hearing that I got nominated when I hear the buzz of my phone signifying that someone needs me to answer them. I look down at my phone and see that Noah is calling me and knowing that I am going to have to leave this room and the sadness that comes with it. I answered the phone with a positive, “Hey Noah, what’s up?” “What is with the ‘Hey Noah’ since when do you answer the phone like that? Also, have you seen my voicemail?” “Yeah I did and I’m really excited about being nominated,” I said with a hint of sadness in my breath hoping that he wouldn’t notice, because I could get my parents out of my mind. “Lily you ok? Your voice sounded kinda sad and I thought you would be jumping up and down with being nominated,” Noah brought up which was the one thing I didn’t want him to do. Especially because he can pick up on when I’m lying. “I’m ok, a little bit sad about my parents but we all get that way sometimes,” I confessed, “soon I will get it out of my head and be my typical self.” “Well Lily, I want to let you know that showing emotions about your parents passing away isn’t a bad thing and that I will be there for you if you need me.” “Ok, but can you tell me what my mission is,” I asked, “I really want to know.” “Oh yeah sorry I kinda forgot why I called you. Ok so your big assignment is that you will be going to Europe for two years and will move around based on the missions you are assigned. Your first mission in Europe will be in Paris, France and you will be going after this highly classified criminal.” “Oh my god you're joking right I’m going to Europe for two years!” “Yeah and you're going to get to explore all of Europe but you will have your fair share of missions too.” “I’m so excited! Noah I only have one question though.” “Yeah, shoot.” “Ok why did they choose me for this and not a higher ranked agent or an agent located in Europe?” “Lily I don’t know exactly why they choose you but I know why I would choose you. Lily, you are a great agent and have a lot to reach for in your future. I also know that if the agency doesn’t challenge you then you aren’t going to reach your highest potential. I have to go to Lily but I will send you an email with all the details.” “Ok thanks Noah for all your help. I will start packing and will be on the next flight to Paris.” I barely said before he hung up the phone. I started to pack for my two year long trip but couldn’t get what Noah said out of my head. He actually thinks that I’m a great agent out of all the agents he manages. Everytime I thought about what he said I suddenly felt warm like I was drinking tea and reading a book under a cozy blanket. Then the next thing I knew I was on a plane to france. As I sat on the plane I began to read over the email that Noah sent to me. It said that I was going after a high class criminal named Katy Walters. She has robbed many banks and high end jewelry stores all around Europe. The police have been after her for years and asked for our help to bring her in alive so that they can interview her and figure out if she is working with or for anyone. Nobody has a clue if she is working alone or for anyone and that person would be key to bringing down the criminal rate in Europe. So that’s why it is important to capture her and take her in before they know we are coming for her. It is also crucial for me to keep my cover as an American tourist so they don’t suspect me. I put my computer away so that I can watch movies for the rest of the flight. The next thing I knew I was getting out of the cab that drove me to my new apartment in France. As I looked up at the building that seemed to be hundreds of years old I started to wonder what the apartment might look like. It could look bright and colorful or it could be dark and depressing. I don’t get a say because we aren’t allowed to change the apartment in any permanent way. I make my way up to the third floor, my legs feeling a little wobbly and find my apartment door. I open it with my shaky hand and I see an apartment that is filled with gray. A soft smell of crisp fall leaves welcomes me and I enter the apartment and begin to look around. I see a bed made to perfection with all different shades of gray and realize that I know what it is missing. I began to search my suitcase with only one item on my mind. My hot pink polar bear, Snowy. As the zipper to my bag begins to open I see my bear. I grab him and throw him right into the center of the bed. The room now felt brighter even though I didn’t change the lighting. I waited for Noah to call me so I could begin the search for Katy Walters but the call didn’t come. I waited for days and then I heard my phone ring and ran to answer it. “Hello this is Lily. What do you need?” I said in a positive tone hoping that Noah was on the other end of the phone. “Hey Lily, I got the tip about where Katy might be if you want to go check it out. The source is kinda iffy but it could be a good way to explore and get to know the city.” “Well I’m going to go check it out and not stay in this bland European apartment that has no form of entertainment.” “Just remember Lily if you can’t get her clean then don’t try to capture her and if you need back up just call me ok.”
