What is love? Some may describe it as nothing more than a chemical reaction. A release of hormones that just makes it easier for us as humans to repopulate. An illusion. But not to us. No. That's the furthest thing from what we held to our hearts as the truth. Love is the electricity I feel when you walk into the room. It's the euphoric shock when I see your breathtaking smile or merely just your face. It is the ecstasy filled energy I feel coursing through my veins when you touch me with those soft fingertips I have become oh so accustomed to through our many years together. It's the energetic connection neither of us could deny when we would practically howl in laughter together just because we were overflowing with mutual happiness. The magnetic bond we have both shared was unspoken, yet, we both know it to be true. I close my eyes and can not help but smile as I remembered our first date together. The tension of the air was suffocating as we both sat on opposite sides of the dining table. We dared not move or make any sound as to not make the evening any more awkward than it already was. God help us if we were to make eye contact for more than a millisecond. The only time we made a sound was when the waiter came to take our order and later on when we paid for the meals. I know it was a risk, but as I sit there waiting for my food I snuck a quick glance at you. A simple glance quickly turned into a gaze as I had began to really encapsulate your true beauty. You softly gazed out your window as your eyes seemingly glowed from the warm sunlight that laid proud on your face, only highlighting the heavenly features you possess. As I stay entranced, the light changed its placing for you had now turned your head to meet my eyes. My eyes widened as I prepared for a frown or a scolding to emite from those cherry lips. Instead, you smiled. There it was. All of those emotions quickly swept over me like one great motion. The static started in my head, the heat rushed to my face, and it all crashed down only to heavily rest inside the pit of my stomach. It was at this very exact moment I realized how dull my life would be without you. Without that smile I'm sure I would never be able to feel that much happiness ever again. Before you came onto my life I didn't even know it was possible to feel the way I did. But that's one of the things I love most about you: you make seemingly impossible things come to life so easily. I admit I was a disbeliever in myself and what I was capable of, but you are what gives me the courage to conquer the impossible. I knew if I'd let you slip away the magic would forever disappear. So I kept you in my life and I was pleasantly surprised to see that you enjoyed it that way. From then on the bond only grew stronger and stronger. Who would ever assume that it was so strong that we'd be here together still. Celebrating our 38th anniversary today as we sit in the same seats that we had all those years ago. The ones that had started it all. But fortunately, this time it was a lot less awkward. The air had a slight nip and it smelled of fresh flowers, I made sure to get you your favorite. I stare at your perfect face as you smile back with the same smile that had never changed. I can't fight the tear that slowly glides down my own cheek as I reminisce in our lively past. I am here for you, and I know you're here for me. I blink to help the rest of the water spill from my eye. I blink to see that that are no longer here with me. I blink only to see a crowd of faces lined up in the pews. I notice among all of them, you are not one. My ears perk up as I worriedly glance around the room, only to be met with obscured stares of puffy, teary eyed people. I look to my left to see a clear door, outside I see the car. The one that had made me stiff, the one that had made me want to puke. The one that should have stopped me from looking to the right. I painfully swallow the lump that rested itself in my throat and slowly turned my head to the other side. I found you. I found you lying there. You lie within those soft velvety sheets of despair, only to stare up to the ceiling with your colorless, closed eyes. Your smile had not been the one I fell so madly in love with all those years before. It wasn't the same cherry lips that creased at the corners when I told you the cheesiest jokes. They weren't the soft ones I had felt and had grown so accustomed to my entire life. They were a sickly blue color; thin and nonexistent. I can't help but repeatedly scream in my mind one answerless question I would be left with for the rest of my life: What is love?
