Unspoken Bonds
Hanna lay back against the soft grass, gazing up at the speckled sky. Axel lay beside her, his dark hair falling in his eyes, but neither of them spoke. In the distance, they could hear their friends giggling and making jokes. Hanna lifted her head and grinned at Axel. "Hey," she said softly. Axel turned to her with a small smile. "What's up?" "I was just thinking," Hanna said, playing with a strand of grass. "Do you ever wonder who we'll end up with?" Axel raised an eyebrow. "What do you mean?" "Well," Hanna began, sitting up and looking over at their group of friends. "We're all growing up and stuff... do you ever think about that?" Axel shrugged. "I don't really believe in that kind of stuff." “What stuff?" Hanna asked. "You know," Axel said vaguely, frowning slightly as if he didn't want to answer. Hanna rolled her eyes, nudging him playfully. "Come on, spill it." Axel sighed before finally answering reluctantly. "I just don't think love is real." Hanna stared at him for a moment before she burst out laughing. "What are you talking about? Of course it is!" Axel shook his head stubbornly, but before they could continue their conversation any further they were interrupted by Dillan and Lily covering them with flashlights while shouting ridiculous things. "Oiiii get a room guys! Jeez!" shouted Dillan while Lily laughed next to him. The sudden interruption made both Hanna and Axel unable to resume their previous conversation as everyone else joined in on poking fun at them for the rest of the night while they all resisted discussing anymore love life topics again this time not even discussing about crushes or high hopes for anything more... or so it seemed… Up in Hanna's bedroom in the attic, Axel and Dillan talked while Hanna and Lilly were across the room. Axel and Dillan were having a serious conversation about Axel’s crush. The atmosphere was tense as they all wondered what each other were saying. “I don't know what to do," Axel said, his voice filled with anxiety. "I love Hanna so much, but I don't want to mess things up." Dillan placed a firm hand on Axel’s shoulder. "I know it's scary, but you have to take a chance. You can't let fear hold you back." Axel sighed. Dillan looks at Axel with a warm smile. "It's better to try and fail than not try at all." At the other end of the room Hanna was telling Lily a secret. “Hey Lily…” Hanna said anxiously. Lilly turned to face Hanna. “Yes love?” she said with a smile. Hanna took a deep breath, “I have something I’d like to tell you.” Lily’s smile faded a little. Lily looked at Hanna with curiosity, “Well what is it?” Hanna sighed, “Well…” Dillan jumped up and faced the girls, "So who's buying dinner tonight?" he asked with a grin. Everyone smiled and got up to leave the attic. Lily stopped Hanna as the boys left. “What were you going to say Hanna?.”Hanna smiled, “I’ll tell you later.” As Hanna followed the boys, all Lily could do was stand there and wonder what Hanna was going to say. As the group settled into Hanna's living room, Axel looked around at his three closest friends. He couldn't believe they had all made a promise years ago to never develop feelings for each other. It was ironic that they had all fallen in love in some way or another. Hanna spoke up first. "I just want to say that I'm so grateful for all of you. I never would have thought that the people I grew up with would end up being here with me now.” Lily grinned. "I know! It's crazy how things work out." Dillan chuckled. "I mean, at this point, it's like we're one big happy family." Axel smiled, but his heart was racing with anticipation. He knew what he wanted and he didn't want to hold back anymore. "I have something to say," he said, taking a deep breath. "Hanna, I am in love with you and there's nothing anyone can do about it." The room fell silent as everyone's eyes turned to them. Hanna smiled and squeezed his hand. "Finally," she whispered. Lily gasped with excitement while Dillan cheered loudly. After the initial excitement passed, they continued talking about their future plans together. "I think we should take this conversation outside," Lily suggested. "Maybe go for a walk or something." Dillan stood up and offered his arm to Lily while Hanna and Axel followed suit. As they walked down the street together, Axel felt more at ease than he had in a long time. He knew that even though they had made promises not to fall for each other when they were younger, life had different plans for them. And he couldn't be happier about it.
