Unheard

• Short story

								
I feel unheard, like my words get lost,  
Drowned out at home, where respect’s the cost.  
Dad disrespects Mum, and she won’t leave—  
Trapped in the cycle, she can't believe  
She could handle it alone, five kids to feed.  
And he knows she’ll stay, so he fuels her need.

Some mornings I wake with anger’s weight,  
A rage at the world I can’t explain or state.  
I feel like I’ve failed—failed my mum, failed my kin,  
Like I’m fighting battles I can’t ever win.  
My best feels worthless, just empty tries;  
I’m tired, man, from living in lies.

Football’s my release, my only peace,  
The one place where I feel unleashed.  
Feelings don’t come easy, they’re locked away,  
I bottle them up and they eat me each day.  
And yeah, when I’m mad, they finally hear,  
But I’m tired of that anger always being near.

I’m not where I want, not the man I dreamed,  
Far from the life I had once schemed.  
But I love my mum, want to lift her high,  
Get her out of this place, where dreams go dry.  
For my four young siblings, I’ll keep up the fight,  
Struggling to make wrong turn to right. 

I don’t have the answers, but I know this much:  
I’d give all I have to bring them up.  
I’m more than my anger, my failures, my fear,  
One day they’ll hear me, raw and clear.
