Touch and Sight
"Touch and Sight" by Leo Tolstoy is a poignant short story that explores the themes of perception, love, and the complexity of human relationships. The narrative delves into the emotional landscape of its characters as they navigate their desires and vulnerabilities. Tolstoy's masterful use of sensory imagery highlights the profound ways in which physical touch and visual experiences shape our understanding of others and ourselves, ultimately revealing deeper philosophical insights about connection and intimacy. The story is a reflection on the interplay between the senses and the human experience, showcasing Tolstoy's brilliance in capturing the nuances of life and emotion.
Twist the forefinger over the middle finger and touch a small ball with them, so that it may roll between the two fingers, and shut your eyes. You will think that there are two balls. Open your eyes,--and you will see that it is one ball. The fingers have deceived you, but the eyes correct you. Look (best of all sidewise) at a good, clean mirror,--you will think that it is a window or a door, and that there is something behind it. Touch it with a finger,--and you will see that it is a mirror. The eyes have deceived you, but the fingers correct you.
