The Watchers’ Watching! Written by Micah Rhoton It was 2792 just five years after the first click of a button car was made. Life was strange. People would bring their cars in their pockets. I, Balwin, growing up, had a great life. Everything was about to change after tomorrow. My mom told us,” We're going to be going on a trip to our grandparents.” I groaned and told my mom,” Granny’s house stinks!” My mom didn’t think that was kind, so she extended our trip. My family and I were driving through the woods when my dad who was driving the car fell asleep. We didn’t notice this, though, so we all dozed off. I don’t know what happened next, but what I believe happened was the car took a wrong turn. When I woke up, I could hear a screeching eerie noise, but then I immediately fell unconscious. After what felt like an hour, I woke up. I felt light-headed and was placing my hand on my head when my hand was red. I was startled, wondering what it was. Furthermore, I kept focusing on my hand when I smelt Sumac Berries. “Yum!” I thought. I licked my hand. Likewise, I finally started regaining consciousness and was able to get up. I was confused how when I looked around there were no houses. Where were mom and dad, where were gram and gramps? From my perspective, all I could see was trees looming over me. Brown and black, fat and thin, tall and small. I had no idea where I was. I could see the sun about to set. What I didn’t notice at first was that the tree leaves were huge. I thought to myself,” I can probably make a hammock out of those. “Just like in the boy scouts,” I thought to myself. I tried to pull the leaves out, but they wouldn’t budge. I tried many different techniques. Furthermore, I shimmied my body back and forth, I pushed in then tugged, I pulled with all of my strength, but it wouldn’t come out. I was about to give up when I gave one last tug and a tiny piece came off. This gave me an idea. I started pulling at tiny pieces, I could hear a tearing noise. “It’s working!” I shouted with glee. I kept hearing the tearing noise, so I kept pulling. After a bit more tearing, I fell back on the ground. In my hand was a piece of the leaf. I kept doing this over and over until I had a lot of pieces. “Finally!” I thought. My work wasn’t done yet, though. I tried to remember the camp director's words. “When you're out in the wilderness, but you have nowhere to sleep,” he had said then continued,” find the nearest leaf then tear, tear, and tear. After that, you weave and weave and weave some more. Tie your knot and you have a hammock!” He ended his little song by bowing. After he finished, he handed everyone leaves and showed us how to weave them. I tried to remember the motions, but my leaves were extremely stiff and rough, so it wasn’t easy. “Next, grab a rock,” I thought to myself. I found the biggest rock I could see. I tried to lift it, but it was so heavy. A different rock, I guessed. It was more miniscule than the other, but I still couldn’t lift it. I found one more. It was like a foot in diameter. I tugged with all my might. It seemed as if it was clinging to the ground. “Finally!”I said, exhausted, when it finally gave way. After dragging it over, I scraped the leaves with the rock until there weren't any prigs in the leaf. Now it was weaving time. I pulled a leaf under at the same time I pulled one over. I did this several times until I only had two ends. Furthermore, I tied them together and I made a hammock. “Just in time,” I thought to myself as I saw dusk take out the day. “Ahh! This is the life,” I said, overworked. I was just about to fall asleep when I saw a black figure. Frightened, I said,” Who's there?” “Just Us,” the black figure whispered loud enough for me to hear, but in a hushed tone. I could see a lot more coming into my view. “What do you want?”I asked. “We want you! Come to us, no need to fear,” the black figures said in a satanic, blood-curdling voice. I had an instinct not to go, but it seemed like my body didn’t get to choose. The way the black figures' voices manipulated me to walk to them. I at first tried to make the temptation to walk to them recede. But the temptation didn’t go away, it just grew. Eventually, the temptation grew so much that my body started moving. At first, it was a little bit, but then It was so much I fell out of the hammock. Dropping on the ground, I fell on a ton of sticks. One stabbed into my chest making a gash on my stomach, and started bleeding. It was strange, but I didn’t feel any pain. I assumed it was the dark figure's presence that made me immune to pain. I couldn’t figure out if it was good or bad that I didn’t feel pain. Eventually, I decided it was bad when it felt like I was being choked around my neck. Barely making out the words, but I was able to wheeze out,” Who rrr you.” “Let low,” a black figure said to another. I could feel the tightness around my neck ease. I still couldn’t control myself, but at least I could breathe. “Who we are doesn’t matter, but we'll tell,” a black figure behind me croaked. “We are Watchers’. We demolish anyone who disturbs this forest!” he continued. “Why are you here, then? I haven’t destroyed the forest. Have I?” I asked the surrounding watchers. “You very much have,” said a formidable Watcher that appeared out of the ground. He seemed like the commander because he was the most eldritch of them all. He seemed partly alive by how his legs walked around me, but dead at the same time. Unlike the others he was extremely bright, he was white all around his body except for the eyes, which were black and seemed as if they went on forever, and I could get absorbed into them. “How have I disturbed the forest?” I asked the White Watcher. “Oh! You don’t know, well, you will get what you did,” the Watcher said. I saw the figure point the Watchers’ around. “Now!” the figure screeched. The Watchers’ surrounded me, then closed in. I couldn’t breathe again. My body was pulled in every which way. I liked how I couldn’t feel any pain because I would be screeching with pain. The White Watcher walked around until he settled in a spot. His body started growing to the size of a mansion. His eyes started spinning around his head very quickly. So quickly, it looked like there was a circle on his head. The ground started shaking. The Watchers’ let go, then they all smiled. Their smile wasn’t kind but alarming. I started speculating what was happening. The Watchers’ started spinning, then lifted into the air. The Watchers’ were sucked into the White Watcher's eyes. I saw the trees swaying around me. Leafs slapped against my body. Twigs cut into me. The grass on the ground rose up and was thrown in every which way. Dirt was being pulled off the ground. Tiny rocks sprinkled onto me. I could see the huge rock I wasn’t able to lift, swooping around. The rock then flew at me, I was barely able to dodge it. More rocks flew at me. Some were able to hit me, but I dodged most of them. Everything being sucked into the White Watcher's eyes. There wasn’t much around me now, but then I saw a large tree’s roots breaking. I heard a strident noise, then the tree was whipping around the area. It hit me with a hard whack, but I didn’t feel a thing. The tree hit me many more times until it was sucked into the eyes of the White Watcher. More and more plants, dirt, rocks, and grass were sucked into the White Watcher's eyes.
