The Moon
Wanting what other people have and not appreciating what you’re given in life
Spring 24
One humid, summer night, the moon was in a bit of a mood. In a fit of rage, she began to confess how much jealousy she harbored towards the sun. So many beautiful things she didn’t get to experience because she lives her life in darkness. An owl sat perched on the tallest tree in the forest, and began listening to the moon’s complaints. Listing them one by one… 1st- I don’t get to see the golden rays lighting up the beautiful sky. Shining down on the glistening sea and on the beautiful landscapes carefully constructed by Mother Nature. 2nd- I don’t get to experience the illuminating wonder of a rainbow after a gentle, summer rain. Manipulating color onto an already beautiful baby, blue sky. 3rd- I miss out on painted gardens of sumptuous plants and flowers, blooming with opulent glory. And the butterflies that are drawn to their beauty. 4th- The cotton-candy clouds dancing across the transcendent sky, moving ever so slowly. Transforming into any shape they please. So peaceful and warming to the soul. 5th- I don’t get to enjoy the true beauty of nature and the awe-inspiring animals that inhabit the earth. I only see shadows of them as they roam around in darkness, scavenging for food. 6th- I miss out on children’s laughter as they play and splash water in the neighborhood pool. Soaking up the summer rays and enjoying the warm weather. 7th- I don’t get to see parades, backyard barbecues, fresh cut grass, lemonade stands, county fairs and so much more. 8th- Beautiful seashells washed up on shore to be discovered by little ones. Digging away in the sand, with their little pails and shovels, creating imperial sand castles. Later to be washed away with the tide. 9th- I miss out on breathtaking waterfalls, that overflow with exuberance and joy. 10th- And last but not least, I don’t get to experience the magnificent explosion of noise and sound during the day. I live in quiet and solitude which can be very lonely at times. The owl took it all in and was shocked at what the moon had to say. Yes, these were all valid points that the moon had made, but in his opinion the moon got to experience so much more then the sun. The moon began to cry, and as she did, the tears began to spread across the night sky. Watering everything below her. The wise owl decided it was time to have a talk with the moon. He flew as high as he could, and soon was face to face with her. “Please your majesty, stop your crying and listen to me for awhile. You speak of how life has been unfair to you and how you’ve missed out on so much. You mustn’t feel that way. There are so many things that you experience that the sun never will. Let me explain… You are surrounded by a million of your friends who help you light up the sky. You shine down on the glistening sea just like the sun but in your own mysterious way. You see fireflies, and campfires, and moonlit walks on hidden paths. You see fireworks that ignite the star-filled sky. The most beautiful and spectacular colors you will ever see. You experience the awe and wonder of the northern lights. Painting a canvas like no words could do justice. You hear ghost stories and smells of marshmallows on a crisp, fall night. You see children running from door to door to fill their little bags with candy on Halloween. You see glorious lights sprayed throughout the neighborhoods during the Christmas holidays. You see lovers out for a midnight swim, basking in your marvelous glow. You hear locusts and cicadas putting on a symphony for the forest to enjoy. You see kids playing hide and go seek in the shadows of the woods. A game made specifically for the darkness. And as for missing the noise during the day, the quiet you induce is one of the best things life has to offer. Sitting in the darkness with the moon for guidance. Breathing in the fresh air, and taking the time to truly meditate on the day’s events. A time to decompress and appreciate the world in silence.” The moon dried her eyes and looked at the wise, old owl. She paused for a moment then realized she had never looked at it that way. She was so consumed by what she didn’t have, that she was missing out on the beautiful things that surrounded her. “ Thanks wise owl for opening up my eyes and allowing me to see what I’ve been taking for granted! I will appreciate the gifts I’ve been given, and try to make each night as magical as the night before!” And with that, the owl floated back down to his favorite spot on the tree. Content with comforting his friend, he settled in for a peaceful, moonlit night.
