The Bloody Meadow and The Clean River
Based on the Battle of Towton.
Through my mouth I felt the weight of my breath, Through my eyes the tears were sombre If I ran, how fast would I get there? If I begged, how much would I receive? I look beside me, and I see blood of whom I do not know belongs. The meadow we fought on now dyed If I pleaded, would I be shown mercy? If I fought, would I be shown victorious? “Long arms, fire at will” I hear, Pattered and heavy feet I feel I don’t know when I started to run When my head came bare of all helmets When my chest became guarded of no metal But I ran And through my mouth I felt no breath but fear and regret Through my eyes I felt no tears but wishes and longing And through my legs I felt no speed but the light wood of the bridge I am now crossing. And as I now feel the wind As I now see my fall, I realise no begging could get me to be at all. My arms flailing trying to flap My back hits the water, and I snap I think of my life and what I had done with it. I think of my breath, and If I’ll ever feel its heat again.
