A Grandmother’s Legacy

My Grandmother led me to a bleak greenhouse, with only the guidance of a dim candle light. As we entered, I could hear the small stops of a mouse. My Grandmother said, “This is where I go when I feel even a small sense of fright”. “May I ask why”? I say in return. Without response, she raises the candle and looks towards a beautiful red fern. She then says, “Brookes…” “ If you were to remember one thing from me, remember that in order to fulfill one’s life purpose, they must let go, and make their best attempt to be free”. I reply, “ Grandma, I am nervous”. As she breathed her last breath, there in that building with me, she lastly stated that, “Darling, death… is the only thing that we can truly foresee”. And even years later, as that fern continues to thrive, I realize the grandma wanted me to know that I’m greater, than just having a minuscule will to survive.
