Stranded
Spring 24
HONK went the horns of the ship. Sophie Cornell was running to the boat, eager to make it in time for the big launch. Everyone in Etobicoke had been talking about this day for weeks, and it had finally come. And Sophie was just as excited as everyone else. The boat was less than two minutes from leaving the dock. As Sophie was eagerly waiting, just like the rest of the huge crowd, something felt wrong. Sophie turned around just in time to see a tall man, in a black mask, with something in his hand that Sophie couldn't quite piece together. But he was heading straight at her! Sophie had to think fast. There were at least 25 seconds until they closed the final entrance of the ship. So, without giving it a second thought, she sprinted to the gate and made it to the boat just in time. She had longed to go on a ship, but not like this! She was petrified! 11-year-old Sophie Cornell was all alone on a huge ship. Just as she broke down into tears, the ship took off, and everyone screaming Hurrah! Everyone but Sophie that is. Just then her sadness turned into panic. The ship would be overseas for 5 days, and she had nothing, but her canteen filled with three or four inches of water, and her blue button-up hanging from her waist. She knew nobody and had nothing. After Sophie was done franticly pacing around the ship for what felt like a century, she decided to find a cot and head to sleep. She quickly fell asleep, eager to forget her sorrow and fear. Sophie was in a deep sleep when she woke up to sirens Blaring. Sophie jumped out of bed and whipped on her button-up. She ran quickly to the deck. And there were crowds of people and at least 30 policemen. She was really scared. She wanted to find out what was happening, but her mind was going crazy with worries, fears, and… sadness. But then, one thing broke through, “The ship is sinking.” Sophie almost fainted. The policemen were saying that they had 75 life jackets, but Sophie was in the back of the crowd. She would never make it. Her thought was interrupted by a rough jerk of the ship. The boat tipped, just right for Sophie to fall onto her knees and slide to the ship's rail. But of course, everyone was too busy to notice her. Sophie was holding onto the rail with every ounce of strength in her. Suddenly there was another jerk, but this time, the railing broke. And she fell straight forward into the water. She used all her might to swim in the numbing water., that seemed to stab her legs. She swam so far and hard, she felt like she would faint. She finally arrived on a small island. She gasped the air so hard; that you would think she was perishing. She investigated the distance of the glimmering night and saw the ship falling. Sinking slowly and finally, it was gone. Into the chilling, piercing coldness of the water. Just as Sophie thought she’d be stranded on the island forever; she heard the motor of a boat. At the sound, Sophie started crying, As she probably would at the sight, or sound of a boat for the rest of her life. But then she heard a familiar voice calling her name. It was Sophie's dad! She climbed up onto his boat and they hugged, like it was their last moments on earth.
