Broken soldier

Under the cover of darkness, I slipped across the border and into the concrete shadows of Baltimore. It had been nearly a decade since I'd last gazed upon this great metropolis of stone complexity, yet, all appeared as I had held it in my minds eye. In my absence, she had remained the stubborn monster, undaunted against the harsh reaping of time and progress . Once again, I stood before her, wrapping it all around me like a warm industrial sheath and for the first time in years, I found myself smiling. Legally. At a soldiers pace, I made my way up Prince George street. Past the antiquated neighborhoods of Little Italy and clear through the new artisan digs of Fells Point, finally coming to rest at the waters edge. Lighting a much craved cigarette and inhaled deeply as the sun rose over the Chesapeake. It was only then that I knew, this broken soldier was finally home.
