Return
Summer 24
I wake up in the morning, scared to start my day and my eyes start to water. It's been almost two weeks now. Will I be able to do it? I hold my lover tight, feeling comfortable in his warmth as I try to calm down. Soon though I have to let him go so he can go to work. I see him out the door and head back upstairs. Distracting myself till it was time for me to leave. The time comes so I get dressed and prepare my food. I go to my work truck and crank her up. She screeches in protest as she's awoken from her slumber and we head to my mentor's. He tells the schedule for the day and as we head off to work we tell each how we've been and catch up on the days we've missed. I'm trying to stay cheerful as I silently pray my body will hold up to the tasks of the day. He changes the schedule last minute and we head straight to the camp. Thank God, I didn't want to go near the Arabians today. We set up the trailer and I pull my chaps out. I take a deep breath as I go to put them on. As soon as the belt clips around my waist everything feels right with the world. The weight of the leather brings comfort. The smells and sounds of the stables tells me I'm where I am meant to be. We pull up the first horse and I got to pull her shoe off. It's weird and I feel awkward as I try to do it without reinjuring my arm. I get the shoe off and keep going. There's some things I can't do, some others I can but not to the extent I used to. But that's okay. I'm with the horses. Their feet in my hands as I create art with them. As we go through the day my confidence grows, and this morning’s tears are soothed. All the time spent looking at other careers is forgotten. A weight lifts off my shoulders as I remember how to do everything. While it had only been a little under two weeks, it had felt like an eternity.
