I sat by the pier at the docks .Before me,were the clouds grey and pregnant with water .Jagged oblong shaped mountains beyond the waters ,somewhere in the mist.It was my dads birthday. The normalcy was to visit his cemetery but I chose the docks because that was the last place we went fishing. Grief. It hung through my being .I was stuck in this moment ,I couldn’t believe he was gone . I still felt his presence around me.He was going to be 58 today .Ten years without my old man and I hadn’t come to peace with his departure. The day we lost him was like any other .He joked ;I laughed. He spoke ;I listened. He sang;I clapped. He slept ,he didn’t wake up .Death snuck it’s ugly prowling hands on my old man, like a thief in the night .My dad was my role model, treasure and protector. The inevitable took that away from me. I sat by the docks for over two hours ,it started pouring down and I didn’t move an inch.I looked at the mountains and fell into a trance. “It depends on you to get to the top of that mountain “bellowed my dad in his deep voice. “I don’t want to climb ,I want to fish”I said. “Then fishing we shall do “ my dad said laughing. A dove flew past the mountains and brought me back to reality.I felt peace and remembered my dad saying to me “Alex, pull harder”. “I am !the fish is too large! “I replied “Then let it go “.
