It's been 1 year. 1 year since my best friend died. Life has been hard without Carter. Harder than anything I have ever experienced in my whole life. It makes me feel stupid that little 15-year-old me ever got sad and disappointed from bad test scores or school drama. Two years later and my definition of hard has changed. Nothing is as difficult as having to deal with the loss of the only person who ever truly understood you. I find myself texting his old number all the time. Having a one sided conversation about everything and anything. I miss him so much. I open my phone and look at the wallpaper on my Home Screen. It's Carter and I at last year's Halloween fair. Exactly one year ago today. I look at his smiling face and happy green eyes. He had the nicest eyes. I had a crush on him when we were younger that never quite went away but we were best friends and I valued that more than anything in the world. I sigh remembering what a great time we had that day. It had been chilly, but not unbearable. Carter had been begging for weeks to go to the fair. He loved that kind of stuff. The thrill of the rides, the smell of the food, even the music. I could never say no to him. We drove separately because he had to stop at his dad's house before coming to the fair. His parents had divorced right around the same time I met him. We were ten, wait no maybe we were nine. It was hard on him at the time, but he loved his parents equally. I remember leaving my house late, so I wasn't there way before him. I had just gotten my license and was still new to the whole driving thing. Carter, being eight months older than me, had already done his fair share of driving and was pretty comfortable with it. I couldn't help wishing that I had just asked him to pick me up instead of driving. It was never something I was great at and now I can't even imagine stepping foot in a car by myself. When I final got to the fair, Carter was already waiting outside the gate. His face lit up when he saw me. We spent the entire evening and night playing fair games, riding rides, and eating food. You know, all the good stuff. I remember feeling so sick i thought I could throw up. Carter would smile at me and drag me to another ride. He had spent all night trying to convince me to go on the cyclone. The ride was a roller coaster that went upside down and spun in circles. I was far too nervous to go on it, even though Carter begged. They said he was in a bad car crash on a back road after we headed home Me: Hey C! Me: I miss you Me: Life as been awful without you Me: I know I say that a lot but It's true Me: I feel like everyone's moving on Me: I can't bring myself to do it. I could never not have an answer. You deserve at least that. Me: I wish you were here to help me figure it out. Me: it's all my fault and I'm sorry Me: If I could have just waited 30 minutes for that ride you wanted to go on Me: if I hadn't wimped out Me: you would still be alive so I'm sorry Me: I miss you so much "Scarlet!!" My mom yells at me from downstairs. "Dinner! Come down when your ready!" I sigh and look down at my screen. Me: I almost forgot to tell you that my parents are worried Me: They want me to stop texting you so I can move on Me: So I just wanted to tell you before I go that I'm not going to give up on you and I miss you and even though I was to scared to tell you... Me: I love you more than anything in the world I let the tears in my eyes fall as I power down my phone for the last time. I hear a small thud behind me then a barely there whisper. "I love you too" I spin around almost tripping over my own feet to face the source of the whisper. It's not possible. There is no way you heard that. I think to myself. My eyes meet a pair of bright green ones and a gasp escapes from my body. My head spins as my eyes focus on the figure in front of me. My tears start falling again. "Carter?" I ask, more to myself than anyone els, because there is no way I'm seeing him. It's not possible. There's no way. His eyes widen in surprise and I can't help but feel confused. Why would my imagination make him surprised? "Scarlet?" His voice breaks and now it's my turn to be surprised. His eyes are filled with unshed tears but they are full of hope too. He look over me and then back into my eyes before asking "You can see me?"
