Finding Love on Aisle 5

A story of how a regular weekly grocery visit became a great love story. With two people being at the right place at the right time.

It was Wednesday once again.  This was my weekly grocery shopping day.  I had already begun my list last night and this morning, looked at the ads.  I was ready to get my shopping done and come home to sit in front of the television.  Once I arrive at my local market, I try to mostly ‘shop the walls’.  This meant I could hopefully make healthier choices and buy less junk food.  There was one exception, my one box of frozen yogurt bars.

Once I got there, I attempted to keep to the walls.  When I got to the meat and poultry, I began to daydream of what I could cook if I bought that lovely pork loin.  Ok, back to shopping, I ended up picking the pork loin as it was on sale.  Enough meat and since it was just for me, no poultry was needed this week.  Next I wandered over to the produce.  It was promising lots to choose from.  Finally I was ready for my goodie on aisle 5 where my frozen yogurt would be calling me.  I slowly came down the aisle to make sure there weren’t any new items calling out to me.  Nope, I’m in the clear.  I look where my frozen yogurt is and with a smile on my face I open the door to reach for one of my favorites, the box of pistachio frozen yogurt bars. 

When I went to close it, I am stopped by a man that had come up beside me and went to reach for the same choice.  He looked at me and asked, “Do you like this flavor?” I smiled back at him and said that I did.  Then I began to tell him it was my little naughty pleasure and we both laughed and he thanked me.  I went straight from there, as I didn’t want to linger, to the register to make my purchases and leave.  As I began to leave he thanked me again and I nodded and said goodbye.  That night although the TV was on, I was again daydreaming about my new friend, my frozen yogurt buddy.  Perhaps next time I go to the store he will be there.

A week later not only was he there again, but he was back on aisle 5.  He smiled as I did then we both laughed.  This was the beginning of our friendship.  After coming over for dinner, George is his name, he started cooking for me too.

A few years later we ended up opening a small diner called Aisle 5.  We have just sold it as our 34th year together brought new adventures for us.  No, it’s not our wedding anniversary, it is the day we first met.

The funny thing is he confessed that he had been watching me every Wednesday for a while as he also shopped on that day too.  We have just begun to dream up our next adventure.  Argentina was last year.  Who knows where we will go or do next.  It doesn’t really matter as we are just happy. We still shop together.
