Family Pressure

I wrote this as a way of venting, because being immigrant girl can come with many expectations that make you worry. I hope this poem helps every immigrant child to feel some sort of comfort and relief knowing that there are people out there that relate.

Your house is supposed to be built with love. However, the walls are so tight. Your heart seeks with passion. While they ask you to soar high. Their hopes are like chains as they pull and bind. Talking about the dreams they had when they had a youthful mind. Making you feel binded withing the patterns of worry. Hoping to validate their beliefs. Yet you're still lost in the maze of their endless grief. Afraid that you'll lose their respect. You balance your worth in their judgy eyes. While the fear of failure lurks beneath the ties. Hearing their whispers turn into sighs. Making them ruin that fragile mind. Yet that love is still an anchor in the storm of reliance. Drowns beneath waves of quiet compliance. Making us torn between love and the need for alliance. Trapped in expectations that feel so suffocating. Why can’t family just be family? And not the weight we’re supposed to carry?
