Diary of a Ghost
Fictional Betrayal
Summer 24
I loved my old friends, and after months of pure hate, I remember what it was I once valued in them. Gem would help me hide a body, and Jane would instantly straighten us up with curt instructions on what we would all say to keep our story straight. The three of us would walk, arms linked, forever bonded in our secret. What I never imagined was that it would be my mine—my body. And the biggest betrayal of all: they made their plans, got their stories straight, and walked away, arms linked—after burying me. I spent months watching my friends from a different worldly dimension, like a ghost, as they covered their tracks after stabbing me in the back, burying my body, and erasing me from decades' worth of memories. Torn between my thirst for revenge and my innate need to protect them, I wondered if I was proud that they had carried out the plan in the exact way I would have admired had it been someone else. I walk gently beside them while they hid at night, wondering if my presence is stronger now that I’m gone. Do they still smell the light breeze of my Eau de Tendre intertwined with the beer-stained wood of our favorite NYC dives? Do they still see my hands drifting in the air, skirt lifting as I spin in circles, flashing a smile laced with a threatening innocence over my shoulder at the man who will be buying our drinks for the rest of the night? Do they still feel the safe and soft clasp of my hands around them with whispers of devotion—“Friends forever, till death do us part”? Is this the beginning of a haunting or the ending of my epilogue?
