So, what should I look for in a winning entry?
Structure and Composition:
- A short story should be well-thought-out and structured.
- It should have a clear structure that complements and enhances the content.
- Are paragraphs and sections used meaningfully and to good effect?
- Is the story unnecessarily lengthy or brief?
- How is punctuation used to set the tempo of the narrative, to create pauses, transitions, or emphasis?
- How is the plot or theme of the story presented, does it flow well? Is the story paced effectively?
Narrative Flow and Development:
- A compelling short story doesn't necessarily adhere to a specific narrative style!
- The choice of narrative style should be judged according to its success in communicating meaning — deciding whether to use a linear or non-linear narrative is a creative choice on the writer’s part.
- Does the story flow well when read, is it absorbing and easy to follow?
- Is there a satisfying rhythm to the sentences and paragraphs, do the words invite the reader to explore further?
Choice of Language & Readability:
- The English language should be utilized to its best using whatever literary devices, punctuation, or imagery possible to create the strongest impact in a concise manner — this is the essence of literature, and what distinguishes it from mere prose.
- Words should be well-chosen and well-placed to express the intention or emotion the writer wishes to convey.
Is the story powerful? Moving? Enlightening or entertaining?
- The reader should feel transported for a moment, to the world-view of the writer.
- The story should move the reader to experience for themselves, that which the writer wishes to convey.
- Does the story linger in your thoughts after having read it?
- Does the story affect you, challenge you, captivate you, or make you eager to read more or know more from the author?
