For the rest of the day, Mike hung out at the shed. He looked around and decided to go through the small cabinet he’d ignored upon his entrance into the shed. Luckily, it was free of blood. He opened the first drawer and one thing was inside: an obituary. Weird. Dad never mentioned a death. He picked it up, and looked at the image on the front. It was of a man who seemed to be in his late thirties, a small smile on his face accompanied with deep crow’s feet wrinkles. Looking through the obituary, Mike learned about the man from his childhood to the prominent eye doctor he became. Oh, he went to high school with Dad. Throwing the obituary down, Mike opened the second drawer and was met with nothing. Oh. Mike sat down at his sleeping bag, disappointed with having found nothing that could possibly help him in overcoming the monster. As it was nearing sunset, he ate dinner, which consisted of another granola bar and some almonds. 6:49 PM, March 03, 2016 The sun was close to setting, and Mike had miscalculated the amount of time he’d have for a walk. To his disgrace, the familiar crunch of leaves was nearby, and the monster appeared once again. Yesterday, Mike had the shed for shelter. Now, he had nothing. So, doing what any other person would do, he ran. To Mike’s dismay, the monster charged right after him. The chase went on for several minutes, and all Mike could do was run. The monster was definitely smaller in size and height, but its provoking eyes always brought Mike an uncomfortable time, making him feel as if he was guilty for something he didn’t know of, belittling him. 6:38 PM, March 04, 2016 Mike’s third night in the shed was no exception for the monster to return. This time, Mike was safe in his shed. The night passed on, Mike was able to get some sleep that night. However, the monster infiltrated his mind, and he had nightmares about its eyes, waking up in a cold sweat. 7:20 AM, March 05, 2016 Waking up, the monster was gone, as expected. Meanwhile, Mike was exhausted, confused, and tired. I need to somehow get rid of it. I can’t keep living like this. For a while, Mike sat, reminiscing on the people and things he left behind. He didn’t miss his family much, but he had one friend in his workshop class who- Wait. Mike ran out the shed and dug around the nearby leaves.. Finding the tablecloth he’d dug away, he unraveled it, and inside were the pieces of glass he’d disregarded. I can’t believe I didn’t think of this. 6:50 PM, March 05, 2016 Mike lay on his sleeping bag, having acquired two pieces of the glass, laying next to him on the floor. As expected, at sundown, the monster reappeared. Mike slowly got up, the monster remaining in place with its eye appendages hovering. Grabbing the two pieces of glass, Mike turned to face the window and brought the two pieces towards one another, struggling at first to find the perfect angle, until a bright light was emitted from between the pieces. Mike watched as the monster, frozen in place, erupted into flames, leaving behind a handful of ashes. 7:02 PM, March 05, 2016 Back in his shed, Mike got cozy under the sleeping bag. I’m gonna sleep well tonight. 10:04 AM, March 06, 2016 The following morning, Mike could only describe himself to be carefree and proud. It seemed like the world agreed. The sun was out, the birds were chirping, and there was no monster left to haunt Mike. Mike stood still, full of gratitude, and took a deep breath. A sound emitted from behind. Mike turned quickly at the sound, at a loss for words. Did someone find me? Slowly, hundreds of small creatures came out from behind trees. They were identical to the monster Mike had just defeated. Oh no. Oh no. Oh no. Mike took a step back, but jumped up into the air when he felt something touch his leg. Surrounding him entirely were these creatures. Mike looked up, perplexed as it was daytime and these monsters were out. The light should’ve killed them by now. The appendages on the creatures stuck out and onto Mike’s legs. He was brought down to the ground, the monsters crawling onto his torso and up his face. Screaming in agony, the appendage of one monster stuck itself to Mike’s left eye, and pulled it out of its socket. One by one, the creatures turned and crawled back to where they came from. Mike lay in a puddle of misery and regret. He ran from home, yearning for freedom, and was now yearning for home, where he realized is where freedom was all along. Any movement he made sent a fury of angry jabs throughout his nervous system, making his - empty, left eye socket howl in pain. He grunted, sitting up and looking around, adjusting to the lack of pictures transcribing in his left eye. The monsters were all gone, seeming to have gotten what they wanted. Defeated, Mike headed back towards the shed. The door was open, but when he looked around, there was nothing that had been displaced. Looking at the ceiling, he noticed writing that was upside down. Huh? He turned around and read the words, “8:49 PM, January 08, 2004. I’ve created a monster. It has my left eye. My name is Alan.”
