On June 19, 1865, Union Army General Gordon Granger issued General Order No. 3, which declared emancipation for slaves in Texas. This day is known as Juneteenth. After the efforts of Lula Briggs Galloway, Greshun De Bouse, Opal Lee, and others, the day was officially declared a federal holiday on June 17, 2021, when President Joe Biden signed the Juneteenth National Independence Day Act into law[8][9].
