The Elf and the Boy Page #6

I wrote this story because I was inspired by Celtic music and folklore about elves and other magical creatures.

A man walked up to Ervina. He was a young human man, cradling a small blue bundle in his arms. He bowed low and set it at the princess’s feet. The bundle squirmed and wailed high, hoarse cries of pain. “O, Your Majesty,” he whispered, “Ancient Mother of the Forest, please heal my son.” Something trickled from Ervina’s stony eye-- not blood, but a tear. The warm drop splashed into the wriggling softness below. Silence. Then a soft, gentle coo. The man picked up his baby and smiled. “Your Majesty,” he chattered, trembling with joy, “Words can’t say how much I...! I-I...I must tell the entire village. Yes! There are more babies than you know! Thank you!” As he vanished into the scrappy warm village, the setting sun released its last breath of pink and orange into the pale-gray shards of sky. Princess Ervina stood staring into the world as tears rolled down her cheeks. She could only look blankly as humans worshipped the grave of her body. Lagi! Ladina! Oh, why did I ever...! Her mind wilted into a fine dust. There was no more room for guilt. There was no more room for grief. There was only a seed of a dream decaying in her heart.
