“Don’t be nervous. We’ll all be asleep. It’s gonna be quick.” She ruffles my hair. I let her. 
“What’s gonna be quick?” My sister slides open the screen door in her nightgown. 
“Nothing. Did you brush your teeth?” My moms follows Ella into the house, messing with my hair another time as she leaves. We didn’t tell Ella. She’s 6. Too young to know this stuff. For her, today is just a normal day. 
I breathe in deep and listen to my street. It pretty much sounds like nothing. Fireworks and yelling people. I go inside.

My mom is already asleep. I haven’t slept in her bed since I was little, but we both pretty much expected it tonight. It’s nice for someone else to be nearby. 
  There’s a sound in the distance. Loud.
  I’m not worried.
  I close my eyes and let myself drift off.
