Lucy In The Sky Page #6
Lucy Noel, a young adult diagnosed with lung cancer, is ready to make peace with the world. But once she finds her beau, Arlen James, she finds that life is worth living, even if you’re dying. Make the best of your life on the planet so you can go out with a bang.
"Luciana, my beauty! You're okay! Oh my God, I didn't sleep all night because I was worried about you. Oh, baby, I love you so much!" Arlen said as he gave Lucy a hug and kissed her forehead. "Arlen. You're so amazing for staying here with me. I mean, you actually slept here last night. I love you so much, baby." "Of course. How are you feeling?" Arlen asked. "Well...I'm alive," laughed Lucy. "You sure are, my love. You're such a brave woman. Makes me so honored to call you my wife." There was a knock on the door. "Good morning, Luciana. And you must be Arlen. My name is Dr. Kendra Franklin. But you can just call me Dr. Franklin," she said as she shook his hand. "How are you feeling this morning, Luciana?" Asked Dr. Franklin. "I'm good. A little sleepy. But good." Said Lucy. "Well is there anything I can get you?" Asked Dr. Franklin. "Maybe some Jello? Please?" Asked Lucy. "Of course. Nice meeting you, Arlen." Said Dr. Franklin. "You too. Thanks for taking good care of my wife," he smiled as Dr. Franklin smiled back and shut the door. “So how long are they going to keep you?" Arlen asked. "I think, or I hope, I go home tomorrow," said Lucy. "Not today?" Arlen asked, puckering up his lower lip. "No," Lucy laughed, "don't do that. I'm fine now, I just have to wait until I'm ready to go home." "What did they say? What about the cancer? Is it better? Worse? Oh God, please don't tell me it's worse!" Said Arlen. "Calm down, baby. I got a chest CT Scan this morning and im still waiting on results. That's actually why I'm waiting to go home." Said Lucy. "Ugh. All of this damn radiation is not good for you, Lucy." Said Arlen. "I know this, Arlen. But whether either of us like it or not, this is what we will be dealing with for awhile. Maybe a long time. Maybe for the rest of my life...Arlen, you have to understand that I'm not going to live much longer. I don't want to face it either, but it's something we both have to face," explained Lucy. "Stop!" Arlen yelled. "Just stop! Luciana Kalia Noel-James, you fucking listen to me!...Stop with the negativity! I married you because you're the most positive person I know. You were diagnosed with lung cancer but you're still fighting. You're brave, you're beautiful, and you're a fighter. Don't stop now, please. Please. I know you're better than this," said Arlen. "Arlen, I'm not trying to be pessimistic. I'm being realistic. I love you, Arlen James. You are my reason for fighting. If it weren't for you, I would have died already because I would've given up. You showed me what living is for. You showed me that I have so much to live for. But we have to come to a conclusion; I'm not going to live as long as you expected. And if I knew you wouldn't have stuck with that conclusion, I wouldn't have been so sure to marry you." Said Lucy. "No, no. Baby, you've got it all wrong. I didn't marry you because I thought you'd live as long as me, nor did I marry you because you're sick. I married you because...well I don't even feel I should have to say. You know why. I said it in our vows. Let's...just not fight right now. You're in the hospital, waiting to see if your cancer is worse for God's sake. We need to be calm and patient. I love you, Lucy." Smiled Arlen. "You're right. I love you too." Lucy smiled back. The doctor came in and said, “Luciana James?” “Yes?” Lucy replied. “We tried to control it all we could, but it just was too damn stubborn. I’m sorry.” Said the doctor. “So, wait, is she dying? When?” Arlen chimed in. “Unfortunately not very long. Maybe a week. And that’s me being positive. They both hugged each other tight and cried. Arlen kisses Lucy on the forehead and said, “forever, Lucy. I promised you forever, so forever is what you’ll get.” The morning after Lucy was discharged from the hospital, Lucy was sleeping and Arlen had made her breakfast. He came into the bedroom and said, “Luciana! I made you breakfast, sweet darling. Time to wake up!” Arlen shook her gently and she wasn’t moving. “Lucy!” Then he shook her vigorously. “Lucy!” She wasn’t waking up. “Lucy, Goddamnit! Wake up! Lucy, please! Oh my God! No! You can’t be dead, you can’t be dead!” Arlen cried and screamed. He checked her pulse and it was inactive. He checked her breathing and it was stopped. He checked both about three times, hoping she’d wake. He finally called 911 and they immediately put her in the ambulance and got her breathing again. They admitted her to Intensive Care Unit right away. She wasn’t on a ventilator but she was close; she was merely alive. “Arlen?” Lucy whispered with a frog in her throat. “I’m right here, baby. I’m right here. “Did I die?” Lucy asked. “For a minute, but you’re fine now. Lucy, I have faith. You’re going to live. I mean don’t you think if it was your time the God would have taken you? This isn’t it, baby! This isn’t it,” said Arlen. “Arlen, honey, you heard the doctor. One week at the most. And I’m fading. This is the end,” said Lucy. “No, Lucy! You’re wrong! How could you even think like that! Are you insane? We’re talking about your life here. Not a broken fucking toy! I need you to live.” Said Arlen. “I wish I could, Arlen. I’m weak...I can’t go on living this way.” Right after, the doctor came in. “Luciana, you can’t take much longer. Your body is giving out and your immune system is getting weaker. I’m sorry but you won’t be leaving this hospital. You’re dying. Unfortunately you have to accept that.” “Thank you for all that you’ve done, Doctor,” said Lucy. “Yep,” he said as he left. Arlen looked at Lucy with the this is really it face. How idiotic was he to try and save Lucy? Especially when he wasn’t living in her body. How could be be so selfish?” I'll never forget you, Lucy." "But you already have. My final breath could be any minute now. And you act like everything is alright. Well guess what, Arlen? Nothing is okay anymore!" "Because you've given me no choice, Lucy. You're dying right in front on me. Don't you think I'd do something about it if I could? You're the love of my life and I don't want to lose you. And don't you ever forget that!" And that was the moment where time stood still; where everything that once was, wasn't anymore. No longer did the earth have room for one more dying patient. Lucy was gone. That night he attempted suicide by overdosing on Lucy’s painkillers. I’m coming for you, baby. Together we can live happily in Heaven. It didn’t work though. Obviously God had bigger plans for Arlen. Arlen woke up in the Emergency room. They had pumped his stomach and released him about 7 hours later. Two years after Lucy’s death, Arlen decided to write a novel about Lucy. He still hadn’t moved on, but he wasn’t such a mess anymore. He had learned to deal with the fact that life is unexpected. But expecting the unexpected would have been accurate two years ago. If only Arlen had known. His novel was called Lucy In The Sky. He wasn’t at all thinking about the meaning behind the Beatles song Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds, or LSD. He made sure he kept tabs on every memory and then close to his heart.Lucy In The Sky by Arlen James: Luciana Kalia Noel-James was a beautiful soul; positive, polite, outgoing, fun, always making me laugh... she was everything you could possibly imagine plus more. Now she is an angel of God. Watching over me as I think about her everyday. Cancer is a bitch; but in a way a blessing. I know that sounds twisted, but the reason why I say this is because cancer brought Lucy and I together. We probably wouldn’t have even gotten married if it weren’t for cancer. She flies high now. Our love was unforgettable; it was a love that even Shakespeare couldn’t describe. And now every time I feel the wind, I know that Lucy is up there calling for me. When I feel the wet rain, I know Lucy is crying for me. And when I see the sun shine down. I know it’s her beautiful radiant glow, just trying to catch my attention. I’ll always love you, Luciana. Someday I might move on but until then, I kiss the sky and the stars every night, reaching out to the brightest star up there...you.
