Less Than Human book cover

Less Than Human Page #2

Since it is pride month, and I wanted to work towards making short stories before I officially publish a book, I decided to write a story about a zombie girl who falls in love with a human girl, and how said zombie girl tries to win her heart despite not being human.

Zoe turned to look at Jasmine, and Jasmine looked back at her. Without hesitation, Zoe turned Jasmine's face and kissed her. She could feel the softness of Jasmine’s lips where hers were not soft at all. Zoe didn’t know what to do with her hands so she kept them on Jasmine’s cheek. Giddiness overtook her body as she kissed Jasmine even further. Zoe didn’t even realize that Jasmine wasn’t kissing her back until Jasmine had pushed her away from her. Zoe placed her hand over her lips and looked towards Jasmine. She had a look of bewilderment on her face as Zoe tried to apologize for kissing her like that and that she had gone too far, but Jasmine got up and ran towards the cemetery. Zoe called out to her but didn’t look back. Then she was gone. Zoe frowned and kept her tears in. She didn’t know what she was thinking. How could she kiss a girl like that out of the blue? She should’ve listened to her gut when she knew it wasn’t a good idea to fall in love with a human girl as a zombie. As Zoe returned to her headstone, the tears then started to fall. She wiped away her makeup with her arm and tossed the flower in her hair aside. Maybe in another universe, she had survived her car crash or didn’t get in it at all and she could have Jasmine to herself. Weeks have gone by and Jasmine hasn't come back to the cemetery. She would see her friends, but not her. She didn’t blame her for not coming back, but Zoe hoped that she would come back just so she could apologize to Jasmine and ask if they could still be friends, and forget about the kiss. It took another day for Zoe to realize that would never happen, and that she still is and would always be alone. Another week passed, and Jasmine did not return. Instead, a family came dressed in black. A funeral was happening, so Zoe hid behind a tree. She watched as the family came over to the burial site and dropped roses into the burial site, the sound of crying followed when they walked away. The priest said a few more comforting words. The family sang and then all that was left were the gravediggers to fill the hole and the family placing a rose on top of the dirt, and in a few months, there would be a new headstone in that place. A couple of months later, autumn had gone and winter came. Zoe watched a group of men come to the grave that had been dug months ago. They had the headstone, and soon Zoe would learn who was in the cemetery with her, and if they were going to leave for the afterlife or wouldn’t bother to befriend her. She didn’t care if either outcome were to happen, Zoe could still only think about Jasmine. When the headstone was set, Zoe waited for the men to leave before going over to see who the grave belonged to, and what she saw had surprised her. The headstone belonged to Jasmine. That was the funeral she was watching, and she had died two weeks after the last time Zoe had seen her. It’s a wonder why she hadn’t seen her since and this whole time she had been dead. Zoe was overcome with the feeling of heartbreak. Jasmine was the first person to stick around with her that night and was nice enough to keep her company that night, and she blew it by kissing her. All for a crush on her, and now that she was Zoe didn’t have the opportunity to apologize to her. She knelt in the snow, kissed Jasmine’s headstone, and stayed for some time. Zoe couldn’t stay long though. Someone would come by to pay their respects to Jasmine and didn’t want to be seen and scare someone away. Zoe wiped her tears and stepped away from Jasmine. She turned her back, and went back to her headstone, accepting that she was and would always be alone in the cemetery. While Zoe sat at her headstone, mourning Jasmine, she saw something in the corner of her eye, walking towards her. She stood up and was about to run away when the figure started to stumble and run at her. Zoe held up her hands to protect herself when she felt two hands grab her hands and move them down. Zoe looked to see who it was and when she did, tears started to fall. It was Jasmine, and like Zoe, she was now a zombie too. Zoe smiled through her tears and brought Jasmine in an embrace. Zoe buried her in the crook of Jasmine’s neck, giving a few tearful apologies for the kiss and pushing her away, but Jasmine brushed her hair away from her face and behind her ear. Jasmine grabbed Zoe’s hand and took her to the same spot where the two of them were watching the stars when she was still alive, and laid back on the snow. Zoe locked her pinky with Jasmine’s when Jasmine took her whole hand and squeezed it tight. Zoe rolled on her side and so did Jasmine. Placing their hands on each other’s cheeks, Jasmine leaned in and kissed Zoe on her lips. It surprised her at first, but Zoe eventually kissed Jasmine back. Their hands ran over each other as the snow fell around them and their lips didn’t move away. For once in her undead life, Zoe was not alone and she would never be alone ever again.
