Karen's Kittycat Club Page #3
Karen wants to start her own club! Karen's best friend Hannie just got an adorable new kitten. Their neighbor Amanda has a cat, too, and Karen has grumpy old Boo-Boo. Now that they all have cats, Karen comes up with a great idea. She wants to start a Kittycat Club! What will the club do? Karen can't baby-sit like her big sister Kristy... but she can cat-sit! Will anyone want to hire Karen and her friends?
Mommy: Good luck, honey. What if everyone on Daddy's street goes on vacation? They'll all ned cat-sitters, so we will be very, very busy. And very, very rich. Chapter 6: Monday. Back to school. I like our class, don't mind. Karen: Hannie! Hannie! Wait up! Hannie and I are both in second grade. Our teacher is Ms. Colman. She's very nice. Karen: Did we get any messages? Does anyone need a cat-sitter? Hannie: You could say “hello” first. Karen: Hello. Does anyone need a cat-sitter? Hannie: Nope. Sorry. Karen: Were there any messages at all? Hannie: Nope. Karen: Hi, Hannie! Does anyone need a cat-sitter? Hannie: Nope. Karen: Darn. The Kittycat Club is not working -- yet. But it will. Nancy: What's the Kittycat Club? This is Nancy Dawes. She's my little-house best friend. Hannie is my big-house best friend. Sometimes this is confusing. Both of my best friends are in my class. See? Karen Two-Two. Karen: The Kittycat Club is our cat-sitting business. Nancy: Who's in the club? Karen: Hannie and me and Amanda Delaney. Nancy: How could you start a club with me? Karen: I'm sorry, but you can't be in this club. Nancy: Why not? Karen: Because you don't have a cat. You have to have a cat to be in the Kittycat Club. That's the rule. Nancy: Well, I think that is very unfair. You can't have a club without your best friend! No calls in two days, and now Nancy is mad at me. I guess I really hurt her feelings. Karen: Does anyone have a cat-sitter? Hannie: No. We haven’t gotten a single message. Karen: Darn, darn, darn. I’m so mad! I mean, I mean -- Oh well. We don’t have any jobs yet. But we will soon! Hannie: Hi. We didn’t get any messages. No one needs a cat-sitter. Karen: Darn. Karen: How did you know I was going to ask you about that? Hannie: Because you asked me about it every single morning since we started the club. Oh. Nancy: How’s the Kittycat Club? Karen: Great! We have so much fun. We’ll get any jobs any day now. I’m sure someone will need a cat-sitter soon… Karen: Good morning. Does anyone have a cat-sitter? Hannie: Nope. This weekend, I'm staying at the little house, so I can't see Hannie. I'll have to call her instead. Karen: Hi, it's me! Hannie: No one needs a cat-sitter. Karen: I'll call Amanda and give her the bad news. Hannie: Okay. I'll see you on Monday. Karen: Yeah. See you. Chapter 7: *Ding-Dong!* Karen: I'll get it! I'll get it! Hi, Nancy! Nancy: Hi. Nancy: Karen? Karen: Yeah? Nancy: I have to ask you something? Can I please be in the Kittycat Club? Puh-lease? Karen: I really want to let Nancy join. But I can't. There's a rule. Nancy, I'm really sorry. I want to -- Nancy: I know, I know. Let's start a club of our own. Okay, Karen? Nancy: We'll start a new Kittycat Club. You and I will be the only people in it. I'll let you to be the president. Okay? Karen: I can't do that. I told you before. If you want to be in the Kittycat Club, you have to have a cat. And you don't have one. Nancy: Can I borrow Goosie? Karen: You have to have a real cat. Like Boo-Boo or Pat or Priscilla. I'm sorry. That's the club rule. Nancy: Karen, that's not fair! Karen: Poor Goosie. Nancy: Your club is stupid, anyway! Stupid Kittycat Club! It isn't even working. You haven't gotten one single job! Karen: Why do you want to be in the club so bad, then? And anyway,we will get jobs. We just haven't gotten any yet. Karen: And our club is not stupid. You are stupid. You are mega stupid. Nancy: Am not! Karen: Are too! Nancy: Am not. And good-bye. I'm leaving. We are not best friends anymore. Karen: Forever? Nancy: No, just until Monday. Good-bye. Karen: Good-bye! *SLAM!* Karen: Hannie, does anyone need a cat-sitter? Hannie: Yup! Karen: What? Hannie: Last night, Mrs. Werner from down the street called! She's going away on vacation and needs someone to feed Kibble, her cat. Karen: And she called us? Hannie: Yeah. She saved our flier. Karen: Well…now what? Hannie: I told her someone would come over this afternoon to talk to her about the job. Karen: Which one of us? Hannie: Amanda has a piano lesson today… Hannie: And I have a Brownie meeting. So you will have to go to her house. Karen: This is so exciting! Nancy: What's going on? Karen: Oh, Nancy! We got our first cat-sitting job! The Kittycat Club is working at last! Nancy: Great… Karen: But Hannie, how am I supposed to get to Mrs. Werner's house today? Karen: And how will I feed her cat when I live way over at the little house? Hannie: Why don't you ask your mom to drive you over there? Karen: Okay. I'm still worried. I don't know if Mommy will drive me to Mrs. Werner's. Maybe I just need to tell her that it's really, really, really, really important. Chapter 8: Mommy: I can't drive you there every time you have to feed Kibble. Karen: That's okay. Maybe Hannie and Amanda will help me. Mommy: Do you want me to go in with you? I know Mrs. Werner, and she's very nice, so you may go alone. But if you want company, Andrew and I can come with you. Karen: I better go myself. Thank you, though. A grown-up cat-sitter should not bring her mother along. Mrs. Werner: Hi! Karen: Hi, Mrs. Werner! I'm Karen Brewer, your cat-sitter. I'll feed Kibble for you. Mrs. Werner: You're the -- Why don't you come in? Mrs. Werner: Please sit down. Wow. This is a really big chair. Mrs. Werner: I guess my ears aren't what they used to be. When I called, I was told the cat-sitters are Katie Bower, Hannah Papadaddy, and Amelia Delaine, ages sixteen, seventeen, and eighteen. Karen: Um, no. We are Karen Brewer, Hannie Papadakis, and Amanda Delaney, ages six, seven, and eight. Mrs. Werner: Oh! Oh my goodness. I'm so sorry, Karen. Silly me. Karen: Do, um, you still want me to feed Kibble? Mrs. Werner: Well, the truth is, honey… I was hoping to find someone a little older than you. Karen: Okay. Karen: Well, if I hear about someone, I'll tell them to call you. That's the grown up thing to do. Mrs. Werner: Thank you Karen! Karen: You're welcome. Mommy: How did it go? *Sniff Sniff* Karen: Friday again. That means it's time to go to Daddy's. I can't wait to see everyone at the big house this weekend. Karen: I'm feeling better. It's not my fault Mrs. Werner won’t give us a chance. I know i’m a good cat-sitter. Don't I feed Boo-Boo and Rocky all the time? Karen: Hi, everyone! We're home! David Michael: Hey Andrew, I caught a huge spider. Wanna see it? Andrew: Yeah! Elizabeth: Karen, do you want to help with dinner? Karen: Yeah! Daddy: Can you mix these vegetables together? They are for our salad. Karen: Okay. I wish the Kittycat Club with finally get a job. Maybe…maybe no one has saved our fliers. Maybe they threw them out. Karen: Elizabeth, You kept the Kittycat Club flier, don't you? Elizabeth: Of course, sweetie. I put it front and center on the fridge. See? It's lovely. Karen: Would you call the Kittycat Club if you needed a cat-sitter?
