House of Dirt Page #2
This is a true story of how I left drugs.
space in your shelter. Do you think you could help us with that?” She nodded and waved us inside. The intake process was a blur of questions. What is your name? What is your birthdate? What mythical creature would you like to become? By the end of it my ears were ringing, and I was wondering if I had made a mistake by agreeing to come to the shelter in the first place. Just when I thought I couldn’t take any more, the woman led us upstairs. “This will be your room. You’ll have a roommate. She isn’t the best about keeping her side clean but that’s just... how it is I suppose.” One side of the room was covered in clothes in trash. The other had a bare laminate floor with a bed. I looked at Abbie astonished. “This is amazing. Can I just stay here. Like all day?” The woman smiled and nodded. “We’re an all day shelter.” “I was going to ask you something August.” Abbie looked at her feet. “What’s that? This place is great by the way. Thank you so much. I’m so excited.” Words were tumbling out of my mouth “Do you want to come to an NA meeting with me tonight? You don’t have to keep coming. Just to see what you think?” I could hear the hesitation in her voice. “Will you stay with me the whole time?” I had never been to a meeting before. “The whole time.” She smiled in a way that told me I had no reason not to trust her. “I guess so.” I figured I might as well. I had been diving into the unknown all day and saw no reason to stop then. I sat in the NA meeting, trying not to be noticed. “So, can you introduce yourself and you know. Just tell us a little bit about yourself.” One of the members of the NA meeting cheerily asked. “Well... I’m August.” Before I knew it I was telling them about a talk I had with my mother and how wrong I was about how my life would turn out.
